Tanzania president, freed opposition leader vow to 'build trust'

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan and opposition leader Freeman Mbowe pledged to heal rifts and buttress democracy as they met hours after Mbowe was freed from jail in a surprise move. Mbowe, chairman of the Chadema party, was arrested last July to face terrorism charges in a case his supporters said was politically motivated and aimed at crushing dissent.

Hunger blights the future of newborns in Chad

In 2021, Chad ranked 113 out of 116 nations on the "Global Hunger Index" - a peer-reviewed tool compiled by European NGOs designed to estimate calorie needs.
UNICEF estimates that of Chad's population of 15 million, around 5.5 million, including 2.7 million children, will need humanitarian assistance this year.

13 million children denied an education in Sahel region as conflict forces 5 500 schools to close

An estimated 13 million children were affected by the closure of 5 500 schools at the end of 2021 in the Sahel region, according to the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) in its latest report. The Sahel region covers Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Gambia, Guinea, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and Senegal.
